Black Teas from Taiwan

In tea terminology, Taiwan teas are still called Formosa teas. Formosa was the name the Portuguese traders gave this island and in Latin it means shapely or beautiful. Tea is grown mainly in the central parts of the country with other areas stretching to the north and south. Formosa produces green, black & oolong teas but are mainly renowned for their oolongs which range from an emerald green color to brown and black (the darker color indicates the longer oxidation of the tea).

Formosa Lapsang Souchong, Black Tea T0010
Formosa Lapsang Souchong, Black Tea
Like the China Lapsang, the Formosa Lapsang Souchong is an acquired taste. The gray-black, slightly twisted leaves produce a bright orange liquor with a distinctive smoky flavor. This tea is heartier than its China relative. Brew tea at 212º - steep for 3 minutes.
$2.55 - $36.30
Formosa Honey Black T1085
Formosa Honey Black
This outstanding tea is produced in northern Taiwan in a small village near Pingling, close to Wen Shan. The tea leaves are bitten by a cicada, a non-harmful insect, thus producing a high degree of sweetness in the oxidation process. No insecticides are used on these uniformly styled jet black, tightly woven leaves that yield a copper colored cup and a smooth, full-bodied hint of honey taste. Amazing!
