Detailed Description
Buddha Ama-cha is an herbal tisane whose leaves come from the Hydrangea Macrophylla var. Amagiana plant. It is cultivated in the northern part of the Japanese main island Honshu, very close to the island of Hokkaido. The tea plantation is situated at an altitude of 200m above sea level and the plantation covers a relatively small area of about 7 hectares.

The leaves of this plant are plucked from August to October. The fresh leaves are dried in the sun then they are stored in wooden bins for 24 hours where they start to ferment. After this time the fermented leaves are rolled and dried.

These large, well-formed, gray-green leaves have a very sweet and refreshing taste. The freshly plucked leaves contain so called glucosides which do not have a sweet taste yet. The characteristic sweet taste arises during the fermentation process where the substance "glucoside" is changed into "phyllodulcin".

Brew tea at 185º - steep for 1.5-2 minutes.

Surprising, Strange, Enjoyable 3/8/2021
If you are like me and love trying new things, this is a must. I really don’t like artificial sweeteners because of the aftertaste and was afraid it would taste like stevia as I had heard from others. It does not. The herbal itself is very earthy, bit musky to me at first. The sweet flavor, like in stevia hits later but tastes more like granulated sugar. Amazing all the flavor notes from one leaf; add it to other teas, and you have a nice sweetener. Definitely a must try. Worth the price of an ounce.
