(Vitex agnus castus) Also known as Chaste berries, chaste tree or Monk's Pepper, vitex is a small shrub that is native to the Mediterranean but is now also grown in many warm climates. Vitex, or chaste berries, were prescribed thousands of years ago to help lower the libido and help people preserve their chastity. It was also prescribed, and still is, to regulate female hormones for women suffering from PMS, menopause and other disorders related to hormone function. For nursing mothers it has been used to help stimulate milk production and to help regulate hormones after delivery. For menstruating women, it is used to help treat PMS and symptoms such as bloating, irritability, depression, headaches and fatigue. Vitex berries are not recommended for men, nor are they recommended for use during pregnancy.
