Valerian Root, c/s commerical |
(Valeriana wallichii) A native perennial plant in Europe and Asia, valerian root is now cultivated in many places, especially in North America. Valerian has been used for over a thousand years as a mild sedative and hypnotic (a preparation that brings on sleep) and is often used in sleep inducing formulas with other herbs such as lavender, hops, passion flower, and chamomile. On its own, valerian root has a strong odor which I describe as earthiness, but others have described as dirty socks! If you're drinking valerian root as a tea adding other herbs such as chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, etc. has the added benefits of these herbs as well as the benefit of their more pleasant taste. Valerian is a great choice for many as a sleep aid since it does not cause the groggy feeling that many people feel after taking prescription sleep aids.
In addition to its use as a relief for anxiety and insomnia, valerian root has also been prescribed for the relief of menstrual cramps and as a carminative, or preparation that relieves gas in the stomach and intestines. It also has been used to lower blood pressure, relieve muscle tension, and treat headaches.
Since Valerian root causes drowsiness, please use caution when taking this herb and do not take with any other sleep aid.
Brew 1-2 tsp of root in 1 cup of water at 212º - steep for 10-15 minutes.
Caffeine Free
