(Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) An evergreen shrub, uva ursi, or bearberry, is native to northern Europe and northern North America. Today it is found in many northern climates as well as high altitudes in the south. The berries of this shrub are favored by bears, hence the common name "bearberry". For medicinal purposes, Uva ursi leaves are used for their antiseptic, astringent, diuretic and antibacterial properties. Commonly used for the treatment of urinary tract infections and bladder stones and related problems, it is also noted to be beneficial for treating diarrhea, high blood pressure and cold sores. Caution: Uva Ursi should not be consumed by pregnant or nursing women, young children, or people who have severe liver or kidney disease.
Brew 2 tsp. in 1 cup of water at 212º - steep for 5 minutes.
