Marigold (Calendula) petals, commercial |
(Calendula officinalis) Native to the Mediterranean, calendula flowers are now grown in gardens throughout the world. These flowers have a wide variety of uses from culinary to medicinal to cosmetic.
As a topical treatment, marigold can be beneficial for minor skin irritations and to help heal wounds, bruises, sprains and sore muscles. See Calendula Oil recipe below.
Internally Calendula has been used for gastrointestinal problems such as ulcers, cramps, diarrhea, etc. It is said to promote cell repair and act as an antiseptic.
The petals are also found in many cosmetic recipes for skin soothing effects. It makes a great hair rinse for golden highlights when used with chamomile blossoms and comfrey leaf in an extra strong infusion. The Calendula Oil below can be used as a base for making creams and lotions.
Calendula is also edible and makes a beautiful decoration on salads!
Brew 2 tsp of herb in 1 cup of water at 212º - steep for 5-10 minutes.

Calendula Oil
Put marigold petals in a wide mouthed jar and cover with oil (such as high quality vegetable oil, olive oil, almond oil, or apricot oil). Infuse herbs in oil, covered, in a sunny location for 3-4 weeks (shaking occasionally). Strain the herbs using a cheesecloth or extra fine mesh strainer or sieve.
This oil can be used on its own or as a base in recipes for salve or creams.
Herbal Facial Steam - for Dry to Normal Skin
Ingredients:
3 cups distilled water
1 ½ tsps comfrey leaves
1 tsp calendula petals
1 tsp chamomile flowers
1 tsp rose petals
½ tsp lavender blossoms
Boil the water, remove from heat and add the herbs. Steep, covered, for 5 minutes. Place the pot, uncovered, on a table surface and sit leaning over the pot. Place a towel around your head and over the pot to create a tent. Breathe deeply, relax, and allow the herbal steam to open and cleanse your pores. Steam for 10 minutes. After steaming, splash tepid water on your face, followed by cold splashes and pat dry. Follow with a moisturizer.
