(Paullinia cupana) Guarana is a climbing vine plant that is native to the Amazon and is cultivated in Brazil where it is used in soft drinks and as a coffee substitute. In addition to other chemicals, the guaranį plant contains caffeine (sometimes called guaranine). Water extracts of the guarana plant have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system due to this caffeine content. It increases mental acuity and has been taken for headaches. Since it does contain high levels of caffeine, people who have high blood pressure or heart problems should avoid this herb.
