(Echinacea purpurea) Commonly known as Purple Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea is a perennial plant that is native to the US. The flowers are a beautiful addition to gardens and are lovely in bouquets. The rootstock has been used medicinally to increase the body's resistance to infection and for blood impurities. A University of Maryland review of available studies (based on 13 European studies) concluded that Echinacea, when taken at first sign of a cold, reduced cold symtoms or shortened their duration.
For tea: Put 2 tsp. of the root in 1 cup of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
